Everybody knows this video, the one with the squid coming alive when the soy sauce is poured onto it. However, nobody knows the science behind it.

The science is that the salt in the soy sauce activates the ion channels between the nerve endings that control the muscle and the muscle itself. Therefore, it causes the muscles to convulse, but the squid isn’t actually alive.

Except, the only time this will work is when the squid is fresh.

(At least that’s what the AP Bio teacher Ms. Fowler told me).
